This past weekend I ran my first half marathon in Washington D.C. I didn’t have any goals in mind since it was my first, and I just wanted to see if I could do it. The course was all over the southwest waterfront and was flat for the most part, with lots of aid stations and entertainment around the route. I ended up just listening to two Mastodon albums for the entirety of the race because A) I like them, B) They have a good tempo for running, and C) I didn’t want to think about what I was listening to. I thought about my 13 positive/negative “dedications” list through the course, and I teared up when I crossed the finish line, which I was expecting to. But, I had finished it. I did it.

Kaytlyn and I stayed in Georgetown Friday/Saturday night and slugged around. An incredibly weird but delicious brunch at Sequoia, laying by the waterfront, eating gelato, and winning purses from DSW (super random and super perfect.) We also got to see our other friend Jackson and his BF. We had an incredible pre-race meal at Thunderburger – so good, best burgers in D.C. Then, post-race victory wings from Wingos. Please just bury me in Georgetown.

Overall, lots of happies.

Metal May

THE SWAMP IS RIGHT WHERE I SHOULD BE

I woke-up this morning feeling like I forgot something – because I almost did! Today May 1st, which means…another year of Metal May!

The rule for Metal May is simple – listen to metal by bands that start with the letter “M” for the entirety of May. You can be looser with your observance by cycling through a variety of metal bands that start with the letter “M”, or you can be stricter and listen to a single “M” band for the entire month. I am probably going to put Mastodon on loop for the next thirty-one days (which isn’t a stretch from my daily listening habits…)

The point is that there really isn’t a point but to listen to metal.

Choose your destiny, young heads.

2014 Eisner Award Nominees!

Comic-Con International announced on April 15th the nominees for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2014. While winners won’t be announced until the San Diego Comic Con, speculation has begun!

The Eisner Awards honors high creative achievement in American comic books. Last year I was dismayed by the  artistic categories for the lack of gender diversity as they were plenty of potential nominees whose work had been picked up in other categories. That does not seem to be the case this year, though. I am happy to see that Hawkeye is getting noticed for its content considering that it featured a very real portrayal of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation to New York and New Jersey in 2012. I’ve been meaning to read East of West. Maybe I will snag an issue at Free Comic Book Day this Saturday?

Below the break is the list of nominees – and my guesses at winners. I have read a handful of the nominees, but have not read the majority and just try to keep up with others’ reviews. My guesses range from: educated, wishful-thinking, shots-in-the-dark, and non-selections.

The Cat Swamp Hijacking and Murder

Image

While driving around Sussex County this week,  (LOLworkingacrossthreecounties) I noticed on 206-S a historical marker that I had never seen before – the Cat Swamp Hijacking and Murder.

I grew-up visiting my Dad’s family in the Byram-Andover-Newton isosceles triangle, and I thought that I knew that route pretty well. Lesson learned – history is always being documented and assessed. This marker was only just added in 2009 and researching this event was interesting (re: horrifying.)

Upon sharing these piece of weird history with Co-Worker, he figured out that there is a geocache nearby. So, I don’t know, New Jersey is weird and ghoulish.
